Strengthening capacities of national health ethics committees

Overview

National ethics/bioethics committees (NECs) comprised of experts and stakeholders may be established by governments to ensure robust assessment of issues and offer empirically informed identification of ethical solutions and policy recommendations.

WHO provides technical assistance to governments in operationalizing, training and setting agendas for NECs. WHO Western Pacific Regional Office is secretariat to the Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting for National Ethics/Bioethics Committees – a platform for participants to exchange ideas, build support, strengthen capacities and foster collaboration in driving sustainable action on regional priority issues in health ethics. The first meeting was held in 2017 on the theme of promoting health ethics under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The second meeting will be held in 2019.
