Tackling antimicrobial resistance

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an increasingly serious threat to health and development. AMR needs to be tackled from many angles at multiple levels and across different sectors. Effective strategies include ensuring quality and safety of antimicrobials and their appropriate use in humans and animals; improving infection prevention and control; strengthening supply systems of medicines; and ensuring financial protection against high costs of treating drug-resistant infections.

Consistent with the objectives of the Global Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance, WHO Western Pacific Regional Office works with Member States to implement the Action Agenda on Antimicrobial Resistance in the Western Pacific through a three-pronged approach:

  • Promoting the development of multisectoral national action plans.
  • Strengthening country systems to combat AMR.
  • Improving awareness, advocacy and behavioural change to combat AMR.
