On 8 November 2013, Super Typhoon Haiyan (known locally as Yolanda) swept across the Philippines affecting 16 million people. More than 28 000 were injured and 6 300 died.
As international assistance began to pour in, the World Health Organization (WHO) was one of the first agencies on the ground. WHO worked with the Philippine Department of Health as co-leads for the Health Cluster, coordinating the health response of more than 200 partner organizations. Together, WHO and the Department of Health began coordinating over 150 international emergency medical teams and the more than 500 tonnes of medical supplies and equipment that arrived in response.
