When Ting Li, an emergency room nurse working on the frontlines in Wuhan, China, became sick with COVID-19 her husband, Haitang, cared for her at home. Haitang, a cinematographer, documented their journey through video diaries.

The diaries present a unique picture of his emotions and struggles during his wife’s illness.

“Every time I come to her room ‘fully armed’ (in personal protective equipment). I have to sterilize everywhere in this home to keep the virus out,” he says in the diaries.

“I cook her favourite dishes, and hope she has enough energy to fight against the virus. My son and I are waiting for her recovery every day.”

When Ting Li’s condition worsened she was admitted to hospital, where she stayed for more than 50 days before returning home to be with her husband and son.

“This journey has left a deep imprint on our lives,” says Haitang. “I hope when my son grows up, he can remember what happened this year, remember what his mother went through, and remember those who devoted themselves to the COVID-19 response.”
