Improving access to recommended medicines and diagnostics for lymphatic filariasis

A core mission of the WHO department of control of Neglected Tropical Disease is to enhance access to essential medicines and diagnostics for controlling and eliminating NTDs. WHO manages the donation of albendazole and diethylcarbamazine for the global elimination of lymphatic filariasis.

WHO helps coordinate access to ivermectin, another medicine donated for the elimination of onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis, by facilitating applications from endemic countries to the Mectizan Donation Programme.

Finally, WHO coordinates the global procurement of diagnostics for use in the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis.  A subsidy is available through WHO to procure the needed diagnostic tests for lymphatic filariasis to monitor the impact of mass drug administration and to determine when elimination targets are met.
