EIOS training

Building a community of well-trained public health intelligence (PHI) professionals is an essential step in fulfilling the EIOS vision of a world where health threats are identified and responded to so early and rapidly that they have zero impact on lives and livelihoods. The WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence supports this vision by promoting the training of PHI professionals at the regional, national, and global level. These highly trained professionals are equipped with the tools needed to support the early detection, verification, assessment, and communication of public health threats.

Our training focuses on capacity building within the EIOS community, ensuring that participants develop the skills needed to collaboratively identify, assess, and share information about public health events in real-time, enhancing the capacity to conduct ongoing risk assessment and respond to health threats.

Building and strengthening PHI competencies

The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the need for public health professionals who can quickly transform up-to-the-minute information to officials and the public at large, prompting effective, confident, and data-driven decisions and actions. Developing and sustaining PHI capacity requires skilled personnel and continuous training. As the PHI community grows and evolves, training and capacity building for a unified all-hazards, One Health approach are essential.

EIOS system training

The EIOS system training is an integral part of expanding the EIOS initiative into Member States and organizations and is indispensable for optimal EIOS implementation. It equips participants with the tools needed to develop specific PHI competencies and EIOS system skills that will support and improve health threat detection and response from sub-national through global levels. The EIOS initiative focuses on training that is designed to strengthen the international PHI network, so that relevant and time-critical information on potential public health threats is rapidly captured, shared, and analyzed, so that it can be used to inform appropriate response measures.

As of April 2025, over 140 Member States and organizations have joined the EIOS initiative, with thousands of EIOS system users. To maximize the EIOS system benefits and features, high-quality trainings are provided to new communities. Since 2019, the EIOS Core Team and the Global EIOS Trainers Team (GETT) have conducted over 265 remote, in-person, and hybrid training sessions in multiple languages, including English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic.

EIOS system training: The workshop

When a new Member State joins the EIOS initiative, relevant experts expected to work on the EIOS system receive system trainings, which are organized and led by experienced EIOS trainers. During the workshop, participants are introduced to the concepts of PHI and the EIOS initiative, followed by technical demonstrations and practical sessions focused on the effective use of the EIOS system.  Participants explore the advanced features of the EIOS system and review case study examples tailored to their context. Sessions are organized to encourage the development of novel strategies for engaging in the EIOS initiative and support the development of protocols for the implementation of EIOS and media monitoring within Member States and organizations.

EIOS training of trainers

To support the constantly growing EIOS community, the EIOS initiative organizes EIOS Training of Trainers (ToT) workshops. Our EIOS ToTs Workshop equips participants to successfully deliver training on EIOS and PHI, thus supporting the EIOS initiative’s capacity-building and sustainability efforts. The workshop aims to prepare participants to deliver high-quality training and support to Member States and organizations.

Those who participate in the ToT are expected to provide trainings on PHI and EIOS worldwide – either within their own countries, regions or organizations, or supporting trainings organized by other EIOS communities. A strong network of trainers remains key to the continued global expansion of the EIOS initiative and the overall mission of the WHO Hub in Berlin.

EIOS webinars and EIOS system clinics

As the world keeps changing, so do the needs of experts working in PHI. The EIOS system is constantly evolving to accommodate those needs and to better serve its users, facilitating and enhancing the work they are doing. To ensure EIOS system users remain up to date with any relevant changes and receive the necessary support and guidance to integrate them into their daily work realities, the EIOS Core Team offers regular webinars as well as EIOS clinics, or “support hours.”

In 2022, we launched our EIOS community webinar series which provides a forum where PHI professionals from around the globe have the opportunity to share their experiences using the EIOS system within their respective Member State or organization. These webinars offer community members the opportunity to exchange ideas and to learn from each other. EIOS webinars are organized everyone to two months and all members of the EIOS community are encouraged to attend.

In 2023, we also launched our EIOS clinics (support hours), happening twice a month. EIOS clinics are short sessions focusing on a specific topic of the EIOS system, followed by "drop-in" hours to ask questions related to the EIOS system to an expert EIOS trainer. These EIOS clinics differ from webinars and provide a space for a one-on-one exchange with EIOS trainers.
