The Global Diabetes Compact Forum was created by WHO to share ideas, information and views that help advocate for a world where the risk of diabetes is reduced and where all people who are diagnosed with diabetes have access to equitable, comprehensive, affordable, quality treatment and care. The WHO Global Diabetes Compact is based on the views and aspirations of WHO Member States, as expressed in the World Health Assembly resolution WHA74.4 on reducing the burden of noncommunicable diseases through strengthening prevention and control of diabetes.
Approximately 6% of the world’s population – more than 420 million people – live with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. This number has quadrupled since 1980 and is estimated to rise beyond half a billion by 2030. While premature mortality from other major noncommunicable diseases is decreasing, early deaths from diabetes have increased by 5% since 2000. More people are living with diabetes, and more people with diabetes are dying earlier than they would have if they had access to high quality, equitable care and treatment.
The Global Diabetes Compact Forum (2021 to 2030) is filling a critical gap by bringing a collective vision to advocacy and collaboration within the diabetes field. Within the Forum, ideas, information and views can be exchanged between WHO and members, as well between members.
