Tunis is the capital city of Tunisia, and its population represents 8.7% of the total urban population of the country. To create a healthy environment and promote healthy lifestyles, Tunis is improving and extending green spaces in disadvantaged neighbourhoods. Building on a national mechanism for social dialogue established in 2018, several meetings have been held between community members and the municipality to drive and sustain healthy urban development in disadvantaged neighbourhoods. Under the leadership of the mayor, two ad-hoc committees were established, one for multisectoral coordination and a local committee consisting of representatives of local nongovernmental organizations working in Sejoumi/Cité Helal. Several consultations have been held with community representatives to discuss mechanisms for community participation in setting priorities in urban planning.
