In 2021, the Ministry of Health in Paraguay was supported to develop and implement a WHO Special Initiative for Mental Health strategy through online consultations, leveraging the existing Committee for Mental Health Reform.

Strengthening Mental Health Systems
Through activities under the Special Initiative for Mental Health, Paraguay is strengthening mental health systems across the country. This includes:
Strengthening mental health units in general hospitals and transforming the national psychiatric hospital.
Developing a deinstitutionalization/rehabilitation program for long-term residents of the national psychiatric hospital.
Expanding mhGAP training for primary health care workers.
Developing a monitoring and evaluation plan.
