Virtual indigenous peoples panel discussion: Inputs to the Report on Health and Nature-Based Solutions

25 July 2022 16:00 – 17:30 UTC Time-2

Chair: Mukaro Borrero, International Indian Council

Speakers: To be announced

Organizers: WHO/HQ Department for Gender, Equity and Human Rights and WHO/HQ Department of Environment, Climate Change and Health.

Indigenous peoples are among those who have contributed least to the problem of climate change, yet they are the ones suffering from its worst impacts. Furthermore, Indigenous peoples play a fundamental role in the conservation of biological diversity and the protection of forests and other natural resources, and their traditional knowledge of the environment can substantively enrich scientific knowledge and adaptation activities when taking climate change-related actions.

This consultation will inform the Report on Health and Nature-Based Solutions. Specific questions to be addressed by panelists include:

  • Since indigenous peoples are connected to natural environment, how has climate change and degradation of nature impacted the health and wellbeing of Indigenous peoples?
  • What are ways in which Indigenous peoples are building resilience to climate change impacts, through nature-based solutions or ecosystem-based approaches to health?
  • What type of support is required by governments and other stakeholders to facilitate Indigenous peoples’ role in preservation of their communities’ health through nature-based solutions? What measures are needed to strengthen participation of indigenous peoples through rights-based approaches?
  • How can Indigenous knowledge be integrated in strengthening scientific research to support the development of nature-based solutions?

Simultaneous interpretation in English, French and Spanish available.
