Official development assistance (ODA) for medical research and basic health sectors as a % of gross national income (GNI) and as a % of all ODA, by donor country
Published:January 2017
The Official development assistance (ODA), ODA for medical research and basic health sectors (health ODA) and ODA as % of gross national income (ODA as % GNI) are collected from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and are reported for the year 2014 by country (not all countries have reported data on this indicator).
What you see
The data visualization compares health ODA by donor country as a % of GNI (bottom left) and as a % of all ODA (bottom right). Regional weighted averages are provided by WHO region and country income groups (top charts).
Points to note:
- The weighted regional averages are derived from the 35 Member States for which data are available. They need to be interpreted cautiously because of the number of missing observations.
- On average, the Eastern Mediterranean’ donor countries have the highest % (0.02%) of health ODA as a % of GNI (top left chart) while the Americas’ have the highest health ODA as a % (5.26%) of all ODA (top right chart) for the reported period and countries compared to other regions.
To explore by country estimates and differences with regional averages (the regional average is symbolized by vertical dashed line):
- Select a region in the top two charts to filter countries according to those categories. For example:
-- Selecting only the Americas region (in either the top right or top left charts), shows that Canada (of the two countries in that region reporting data in that period) exceeded the regional average (0.01%) both for health ODA as a % of GNI (Canada: 0.03%) and health ODA as a % of total ODA (Canada: 10.45%).
-- Selecting only Europe (in either the top left or top right charts), shows that Luxembourg exceeded the regional average of 0.01% for health ODA as % of GNI with 0.07%. Iceland had the highest ODA as % all ODA (Iceland: 6.5%) for that region, also exceeding the regional average of 2.4%. (To sort the list of countries in the bottom right chart by health ODA as % of total ODA, hover the cursor just above the middle of the top bar until a small ‘sort’ icon appears. Click on the icon to sort.) - Hover the cursor on a bar in a graphic to see more information in a popup window.
- Undo the selection by clicking ‘undo’ or ‘reset’ near the bottom of the page or by clicking the same element again.
