Vector control interventions in the pipeline

Published: January 2020

WHO collated vector control interventions that are currently under development. They are reported below by disease, type, and stage of development. When available developers’ names are also indicated.

What you see

The data visualization above shows, for vector control, the number of interventions by disease (chart A), the number of interventions by type (chart B), and the number of interventions by stage of development (chart C). Chart D lists the vector control interventions and, where appropriate, the interventions name, the targeted diseases, and their intervention type (hovering on the last column in the chart D provides additional information in a pop-up window, such as the developer and the R&D stage of the vector control intervention). An intervention can target more than one disease, the total number of interventions is therefore not equivalent in all the charts.

Points to note:

  • Across all diseases (malaria, Aedes-borne arboviral diseases, leishmaniasis), a total of 36 vector control interventions are under development (chart B) with the highest proportion targeting malaria (72%; 28) and 23% Aedes-borne arboviral diseases (chart A).
  • The top three intervention types across all diseases are insecticide-treated nets (ITN), followed by indoor residual wall treatments and vector traps for disease management (31%, 19%, and 8% respectively) (chart B).
  • Around one-third of the interventions (11; 31%) are being evaluated in large-scale epidemiological trials, with trials being either in the planning or implementation stage (view 'epidemiological trials' in chart C).

To explore the data further

  • Select a disease, an intervention type or a stage by clicking on a bar, a slice of pie or a cell in a table to filter data for the desired selection in the other charts.
  • Hover the cursor on a data element of interest (e.g. a cell in a table, or a bar in a graphic) to see more information on that data element in a pop-up window.
  • Hold the ‘Ctrl’ key to select more than one option, for example, two diseases.
  • Undo a selection by clicking the symbols for ‘undo’ or ‘reset’ near the bottom of the page or by clicking on the same element again.

Scope and limitations

Scope of the data

  • This analysis includes vector control interventions that are currently active in one of the following stages:
  • 'Prototype development': Prototype development
  • 'Data generation': Data generation to support assessment of safety, quality and entomological efficacy
  • 'Epidemiological trials': Large scale epidemiology trials
  • 'WHO assessment': Under assessment to inform Prequalification listing and/or WHO policy recommendation
Limitations of the data
  • The data will be updated on a regular basis, but time lags with up-to-date data from the source are inevitable.
  • This data could be incomplete. If stakeholders are aware of other new interventions in the pipeline they can email WHO at gvcr@who.int with updates.
