Patients affected by skin conditions present signs and symptoms that guide the next steps for clinicians to reach the correct diagnosis. Sometimes a syndrome is enough to establish a diagnosis while in other instances it is necessary to perform specific tests. This course provides an overview of skin diseases seen in the tropics with emphasis on diagnoses that are common or of medical/public health importance. The diseases are organized by presenting complaint. This is designed to reflect how clinicians evaluate patients: by clinical presentation rather than by aetiology of disease.

The aim of the online course is to provide information about Buruli ulcer, epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment and public health measures to increase knowledge and skills of national programme managers and front-line health workers to address this disease. Atopic dermatitis is one of the common skin diseases globally and is often co-endemic with many skin neglected tropical diseases. This course provides comprehensive information about the cause, diagnosis, and management of atopic dermatitis, with special consideration to Sub-Saharan countries and dark skin.

Leprosy is one of the oldest diseases known to mankind. The disease affects primarily the skin and peripheral nerves. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment ensures complete cure and prevention of disabilities. Leprosy can be diagnosed and treated effectively at the peripheral healthcare level. The aim of the course is to increase the knowledge and skills of front-line healthcare workers to be able to provide the essential services to persons affected by the disease.

The course is intended for national neglected tropical disease focal points, health professionals and care providers from LF-endemic countries. The course covers the strategies of the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis, assessment of persons with LF disease, the clinical management of the disease including management of lymphoedema hydrocele, and associated support such as mental health care.

Onchocerciasis – or “river blindness” – is a parasitic disease caused by the filarial worm Onchocerca volvulus transmitted by repeated bites of infected blackflies (Simulium spp.). This course examines the epidemiology of Onchocerciasis, clinical aspects, impact, diagnosis, treatment and control, elimination, public health interventions and role of community health workers. This course is aimed at frontline health workers at national and district levels on skin NTDs.

Post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) is usually a sequel of visceral leishmaniasis and is one of the skin neglected tropical diseases. People with PKDL are considered a potential source of Leishmania infection. This course aims at providing health workers with the necessary knowledge to understand the epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance of this important disease. This online course is training for national and district-level health workers. It is available in english and chinese.

It can cause disseminated disease and high mortality in immunocompromised people such as people with advanced HIV disease. The aim of the course is to provide information on the epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment for sporotrichosis.

This course examines the wide range of skin issues affecting migrants and discusses special considerations when providing care for this unique patient population. It also covers how to diagnose and manage infectious, immunological, inflammatory, neoplastic, and environmental dermatological conditions affecting migrants.

Superficial fungal infections are some of the most prevalent diseases across the world. This course explores the epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of the most common superficial fungal infections globally. This course also talks about the rapid spread of drug-resistant dermatophytes and how to mitigate its effects.

Chronic wounds represent a widely neglected problem. Many skin NTDs either present with or can develop into wounds/ulcers. In addition, many common skin conditions, such as diabetic foot and venous ulcers require wound care, providing many opportunities for synergy of resources. This course addresses the epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis, treatment and psychological and socioeconomic impacts of wounds for front-line healthcare workers in resource-limited settings. The aim of the course is to increase familiarity and skills of front-line health workers to manage chronic wounds of various causes in resource-limited settings and to raise awareness of when to refer patients onwards.

It is characterized by irregular bouts of fever, weight loss, enlargement of the spleen and liver, and anaemia. East Africa is currently reporting the highest number of VL cases worldwide.
