Capacity building
Enabling health systems to deliver NTD services
Students use tablets to study NTD online courses in Dadaab, Kenya.
Strengthening the capacity of national health systems will ensure delivery of neglected tropical disease (NTD) programmes through existing infrastructures, improve the sustainability and efficiency of interventions against NTDs, and guarantee that patients have equitable access to all aspects of treatment, care and support.
The NTD road map 2021–2030 includes capacity-building among the enablers that will foster accelerated action towards meeting the 2030 targets. Capacity-building will ensure high-performing programmes through a set of measures including pre-deployment and in-service training, transfer of skills from vertical NTD programmes to primary health systems, plans to handle health worker attrition and retirement, and sharing uptake of best practices.
As countries define their national NTD plans, the support of partners will be essential for building capacity and enabling targets to be achieved.
WHO supports global capacity-building efforts by developing online resources and making them available to the global NTD community.
