SAGE-INDEPTH collaboration

SAGE-INDEPTH Wave 1, 2007

SHORT: A short version of the SAGE questionnaire, focusing on health and well-being, was implemented in 2007 as part of the SAGE-INDEPTH collaboration. Face-to-face interviews were conducted during routine surveillance rounds in eight health and demographic surveillance system (HDSS) field sites from the International Network for the continuous Demographic Evaluation of Populations and Their Health in developing countries (INDEPTH): South Africa (Agincourt), Viet Nam (Filabavi), United Republic of Tanzania (Ifakara), Bangladesh (Matlab), Kenya (Nairobi), Ghana (Navrongo), Indonesia (Purworejo), and India (Vadu).

FULL: The full SAGE instrument was also implemented in a random sample of respondents in Agincourt (N=425), Navrongo (N=593) and Vadu (N=375) HDSS.

The goals are to generate needed health data on older adults in lower income countries, to use common measurement strategies across HDSS to examine ageing and adult health, and to develop methods to link routine surveillance data and longitudinal survey data. The full survey was implemented in a random sub-set of respondents in three field sites that also had a national level SAGE study, as a means to assess how well the small areas compare to the national level data.

Survey materials (short)

Socio-demographic information was pulled from the HDSS surveillance data and verified at the time of interview, including, age, sex, residence (urban/rural), educational status, marital status, ethnicity/background and socio-economic variables.
The questionnaire modules used for SAGE-INDEPTH interviews were taken from the standard SAGE instrument and included: health state descriptions plus corresponding vignettes; disability measures based on WHODAS-2; and, evaluative well-being using the 8-item WHOQoL. The vignettes were implemented using a rotation system to decrease respondent burden. The summary of specific measures included in the SAGE-INDEPTH short questionnaire are listed below.

Health state descriptions and disability

Overall self-rated health; eight self-rated health domains (affect, mobility, sleep/energy, cognition, interpersonal activities, vision, self-care and pain)

Vignettes for the same set of eight health domains

12-item WHO Disability Assessment Schedule, Version 2 (WHODAS-II)

Subjective well-being and quality of life

Perceptions about quality of life and well-being; 8-item WHO Quality of Life measure (WHOQoL)

Support

Support for SAGE-INDEPTH Wave 1 was provided by the U.S National Institute on Aging (NIA) Division of Behavioral and Social Research (BSR) through Interagency Agreements (YA1323–08-CN-0020; Y1-AG-1005–01) with WHO, covering six HDSS field sites (four African sites plus Matlab and Vadu).

The Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research (FAS) provided support to Umeå University for two HDSS sites (FilaBavi and Purworejo).

WHO provided salary support for members of the WHO SAGE team.
