Other collaborations
SAGE has also pursued cross-study comparisons and analyses with other ageing studies, including:
University of East Anglia, School of International Development
Pensions, health and wellbeing of older people in low and middle income countries. Funded by Economic and Social Research Council. Partners: Neuroscience Institute, Padova, Italy; South Asia for Chronic Disease, Public Health Foundation of India, India; School of International Development, University of East Anglia, UK; HelpAge International, UK; World Health Organization, Switzerland. Multiple partners to identify policies that will promote the health, economic security and wellbeing of older people in poorer countries. Drawing on SAGE, we examined a number of issues of critical relevance to policy-makers.
Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), World Health Survey Plus (WHS+)
A World Health Survey Plus (WHS+) was implemented in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates) between 2007 and 2012. The survey instrument is a combination of the SAGE and World Health Survey questions, modules and methods, with country-specific adaptations. WHO provided technical and some financial support, with the GCC Secretariat providing the majority of the financial support. Survey tools and data will be available through the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean (www.emro.who.int/entity/elderly-health/) on request.
U.S. Health and Retirement Study (HRS)
A longitudinal panel study that surveys a representative sample of more than 26,000 Americans over the age of 50 every two years. Data is available through the website link above. WHO has generated a harmonized data set containing selected health variables for comparisons between HRS Wave 7 (2004) and SAGE Wave 0 (2002/4), HRS Wave 9 (2008) and SAGE Wave 1 (2007/10). These data will be available through this website in 2014. Funding was provided by the US NIA BSR through grant R21AG034263.
English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA)
A longitudinal multidisciplinary data resource with datasets and associated documentation for Waves 0-5 all available on the Economic and Social Data Service website (link provided above).
WHO has generated a harmonized data set containing selected health variables for comparisons between ELSA Wave 2 (2004) and SAGE Wave 0 (2002/4), ELSA Wave 4 (2008) and SAGE Wave 1 (2007/10). These data will be available through this website in 2014. Funding was provided by the US NIA BSR through grant R21AG034263.
Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE)
A version of the health state descriptions module and vignettes similar to those used in SAGE were added to the SHARE data collection instrument in 2004 in eight countries. This module was again included in the first round of follow-up in 2007 in those same eight countries, plus in an additional three countries. Data are available through the SHARE website link provided above.
WHO has generated a harmonized data set containing selected health variables for comparisons between SHARE Wave 1 (2004) and SAGE Wave 0 (2002/4), SHARELIFE (2008/9) and SAGE Wave 1 (2007/10). These data will be available through this website in 2014. Funding was provided by the US NIA BSR through grant R21AG034263.
China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS)
A pilot of almost 2700 respondents was completed in 2008–2009, with the first full wave of data collection completed in 2012. CHARLS is conducted by the National School of Development (China Center for Economic Research) at Peking University and aims to be representative of the residents of China age 45 and older, with no upper age limit.
WHO has generated a harmonized data set containing selected health variables for comparisons between CHARLS pilot (2008/9) and SAGE China Wave 1 (2008/10). These data will be available through this website in 2014. Funding was provided by the US NIA BSR through grant R21AG034263.
Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI)
A pilot study was completed in 2008–2009 in 1600 respondents, including respondents from two states that overlap with SAGE India (Karnataka and Rajasthan). A first full wave of interviews is planned for 2013 or 2014.
WHO has generated a harmonized data set containing selected health variables for comparisons between LASI pilot (2010) and SAGE India Wave 1 (2007/8). These data will be available through this website in 2014. Funding was provided by the US NIA BSR through grant R21AG034263.
