Global reporting for viral hepatitis
The Seventy-Fifth World Health Assembly endorsed the Global health sector strategy on viral hepatitis for the period 2022-2030, which sets the target to eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030, and requires regular reporting on progress in countries.
The platform Global reporting for viral hepatitis is designed to help monitor country and global progress towards the 2030 target.
The reporting platform includes indicators for:
1. selected data elements from the monitoring and evaluation framework not already captured by other systems; and
2. critical policy uptake indicators.
The reporting platform has been simplified and shortened to a one-page form together with the comments box and a short set of policy questions.
Proposed process for annual international reporting
To support the reporting, WHO has collected partner data on viral hepatitis. WHO regional and country offices can make these estimates available for countries to use to fill gaps in country data. We suggest the following step-wise process for reporting:
1. Country data – if you have validated country data, please include this in the form. Country validated data is prioritised for development of the cascade of care and disease burden estimates. Please include references where available and comment if it is different from partner data.
2. Country data already validated with WHO Regional Offices – if the region has completed an exercise with countries to validate hepatitis data, please include that data.
3. Partner data – if there are major gaps in data, please review the partner data provided for your country, and include that in the reporting form if you validate this data. The partner data are just inputs for Member States to own and validate the data they report on the Global reporting for viral hepatitis. Please include comments on any differences you find.
4. Regional averages – if there is not a source of data that is acceptable, include regional averages that are applied to your country, where appropriate (as provided by the WHO regional office).
5. Gaps in reporting – as there would be gaps in information, we would prefer data to be filled in from the sources above. Please do not leave blanks in the reporting annexes. If there are gaps, kindly comment on how we can support you to improve data collection in the coming year. However, if there are gaps in the data where you do not find the above sources useful, you can leave the reporting cell empty, and include a comment in the comments box. As a priority, please complete the cascade of diagnosis and treatment and comment on the burden data.
To support the reporting, WHO regional Strategic Information and hepatitis focal points can provide clarifications. Please contact hepatitis@who.int.
