Digital Health Applications
The focus of the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre (GTMC) Digital Health applications Unit is on related technologies that are transforming health care, offering innovative ways to enhance the accessibility and effectiveness of traditional medicine. These applications improve data collection, analysis, and dissemination, enabling better decision-making and supporting individual and community well-being.
The GTMC in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), is leading efforts to map AI and technology applications in traditional medicine. A technical brief identifies best practices and governance and ethics considerations for countries in leveraging these advancements.
A key initiative that the Unit supports is the development of the WHO Traditional Medicine Global Library, inspired by the vision and request of global leaders, including at the G20 and BRICS. This digital repository will consolidate traditional medicine knowledge from around the world, supporting research, education, and innovation, and protected by intellectual property and rights frameworks.
Other projects include online courses on AI ethics for traditional medicine practitioners, personalized medicine applications, and a market analysis of digital health’s role in traditional medicine. These efforts aim to create equitable access to traditional medicine knowledge, goods, and services globally.
