WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre
The WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre (GTMC) is a knowledge hub for traditional medicine. As part of WHO’s overall traditional medicine strategy, it has a strategic focus on research and evidence, strengthening health systems, sustainability and equity, and innovation and technology to optimize the contribution of traditional medicine to global health and sustainable development. At the same time, respect for local heritages, resources and rights is a guiding principle.

Global Summit and Collaborations

The WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre (GTMC) organizes the biennial WHO Traditional Medicine Global Summit, first held in 2023 alongside the G20 in India. This landmark event brings together policymakers, traditional medicine practitioners, Indigenous Peoples, academics, private sector representatives, and other stakeholders to share best practices, foundational knowledge and groundbreaking research, and innovations in traditional medicine towards the health and well-being of people and planet.

The next Summit in 2025 will focus on “Restoring Balance for People and Planet: The Science and Practice of Health and Well-being.” It will explore how ancient remedies and modern science can work together to address global health challenges.

The first WHO Traditional Medicine Global Summit resulted in a multistakeholder action agenda, the Gujarat Declaration that guides GTMC’s work and drives advances in traditional medicine worldwide. The Global Summit has raised global attention to traditional medicine, including in global policy fora like the 2023 UN General Assembly, G20, BRICS, and the 2024 UN Conference of Parties on Biodiversity.
