Public Health Intelligence in times of COVID-19
Monday, 6 December 2021
Two years have passed since the last EIOS Global Technical Meeting (GTM) in November 2019 and the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the world ever since. Besides affecting our lives in various ways, it very specifically impacted public health, including the Public Health Intelligence (PHI) function and how PHI experts do their work. Without a doubt, the pandemic presented a myriad of new challenges in the field of PHI, yet it also triggered a number of new initiatives and brought about exciting innovations.
On Day 1 of the 2021 GTM we focus on positioning PHI in the context of COVID 19 and conference hosts, Philip AbdelMalik and Yasmin Rabiyan from the EIOS Core Team at WHO lay out the conference roadmap.
In the “Welcome to the 2021 GTM”-session, the conference hosts introduce participants to the EIOS initiative and introduce the audience to the week’s agenda. WHO Executive Director Mike Ryan and WHO Assistant Director-General Chikwe Ihekweazu address participants in their respective welcome remarks and spoken word artist Muneera Pilgrim performs a tailor-made poem or "ode" to PHI professionals. She further engages with participants in gathering their voices for a community poem, which she is to write over the course of the week and performs at the final day of the conference.
The Experiences and Lessons Learned sessions present a snapshot of PHI experts’ experiences across regions, organizations and mandates since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Whether working directly on tracking the pandemic or trying to keep a focus on not losing sight of other threats to human and animal health, PHI experts are at the forefront of intelligence work. What has occupied them over this past year? What are some of the lessons learned? Which challenges did they have to overcome and where do they see the remaining gaps? Esther Hamblion, Epidemiologist at WHO explores these and other questions with two sets of experts including international, regional and national perspectives, looking at the topics of animal health and mass gatherings.
